Boston Day and Evening Academy engages young adults to build a vision for their future through supportive relationships and meaningful competency-based learning experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n Young adults own their learning to ignite personal and community transformation.<\/span><\/p>\n BDEA students are like any other high school student in Boston– except that they haven’t been given the chance, or the tools they need to be academically successful. \u00a0As a result, all of our students–all<\/em>\u00a0of them– have attended previous schools where they have struggled academically, have been held back one or more times, or have felt lost, unsafe,\u00a0or unengaged.<\/p>\n Once here, we find that students flourish, in large part because they are listened to, respected for who they are and for the gifts they possess, and because our method of teaching and assessment actually makes sense. \u00a0As one student said,\u00a0I work at my own pace. Teachers make sure I \u2018understand\u2019 rather than \u2018know\u2019.<\/em> And another:\u00a0I get a lot of support from people that believe in me even when I doubt myself.\u00a0And another:\u00a0I get taught as an individual so I can get help with what I need.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div> \u201cI was lost and confused and sometimes left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThere were kids in the hallways every day including myself.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI was just another student\u2026I didn\u2019t get the attention I needed.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI never went to class.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI was just a number.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNobody cared if I graduated or not. They didn\u2019t believe in me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI couldn\u2019t be me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMy attendance was horrible.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t see any hope of graduating.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI felt like I was on my own.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI felt lost and there wasn\u2019t enough help.<\/p>\n \u201cNo one was able to help me with my problems at school, such as being bullied\u2026<\/p>\n \u201cI got away with anything and no one seemed to care, even me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div> \u201cI felt like it was a new beginning for me\u201d \u201cEveryone gets a second chance.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI can be me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI have people who check up on me to make sure I\u2019m doing what I\u2019m supposed to be doing. I wake up and feel like I need to go to school which is a good feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI actually love coming to school.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI get taught as an individual so I can get help with what I need.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe relationships between students and teachers are phenomenal. I feel more at ease.\u201d \u201cThe teachers push you to your full potential and more. The theme should be love and education.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI get support and love. I get encouragement to do better. I found a better me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI feel like I\u2019m succeeding in school and life.\u201d \u201cThe staff really care about the success of each and every student.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div> \u201cI would not be in school.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be happy with who I am and what I can do to make a change.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI would have probably dropped out and never would have thought of going to college.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be in school. I would still be a drop out.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be going to college.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI would not be graduating. I wouldn\u2019t learn not just education lessons but life lessons.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI would still be lost.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI would have dropped out and I would be working at Burger King or picking trash from a dump truck. I would have been a mad person every day.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cMy grandmother wouldn\u2019t have a reason to be proud of me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be in school right now.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI would still be skipping school.
